World War II
There is much excitement in the Kingfishers’ Classroom about this topic - World War II, and particularly the prospect of a visit to the newly opened and newly refurbished Petersfield Museum (which is well worth a visit if you haven’t been already). During this topic the children find out about the events that caused the war to start, and the effects the war had on the everyday lives of people living locally and further afield; including evacuation, rationing, the role women played in the war and the devastation that the Blitz caused to London.
In art, the children learn about the work of LS Lowry’s and Henry Moore, particularly the sketches Moore drew depicting people using underground stations as shelters which inspire a similar pieces of work from the children. They also look at silhouettes and create artwork to represent the scenes during the Blitz.
In English, the children focus on two key texts (novel and picture book) and use these to write evacuation letters, setting and character descriptions and creating their own WW2 poetry.
